Arsenal are said to be in advanced talks with 29-year-old Borussia Dortmund defender, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
The Gunners are currently without a manager, but that does not appear to have stopped them from entering into negotiations with the Greek international over a move to the Emirates Stadium.
The 29-year-old defender has another year left on his deal with the Bundesliga outfit, but having turned down offers to extend his stay beyond next summer, Dortmund are said to be resigned into cashing in on the experienced man.
Arsenal’s defence has been criticised for the last few seasons and with Per Mertesacker now retiring to join the backroom staff at the Emirates, and Laurent Koscielny potentially out for the start of the next campaign due to the injury he picked up in the Europa League semi-final with Atletico Madrid, there is a gap in the heart of the Gunners’ back line that needs filling.
Arsenal remains a good attacking threat so whoever comes in will want the defence to be addressed as a matter of urgency, and if they can secure a switch for Papastathopoulos that would be seen as a positive start.
